Plants

Garden flowers

The flowers people grow on purpose, which nearly always came from somewhere else. A tulip is a Central Asian mountain plant, a dahlia is Mexican, a rose is a hybrid of species from three continents, and an ordinary English border is a small map of the world.

The dahlia was grown by the Aztecs for its edible tubers and its hollow stems, which they used as water pipes, and its flowers were an afterthought. It reached Europe in 1789 as a possible substitute for the potato, failed at that, and became one of the most bred flowers in the world instead.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
