Deep violet-blue petals around a cluster of stamens whose filaments are visibly hairy under magnification.
Those hairs are a single cell wide, and the movement of the cytoplasm inside them is easy to see under a simple microscope, which made spiderwort one of the first plants used to show students that a living cell is not still. Each flower lasts a single morning and dissolves into a blue jelly by afternoon.
