Iris are built for a specific job. The three drooping outer segments are falls and act as landing platforms; each one hides a stigma and an anther in the tunnel above it, so an insect heavy enough to land and push in is loaded with pollen on the way through and unloads it at the next flower.
Siberian iris will take wet feet, which is why they are planted at a pond edge like this, and they hold their leaves as a clean upright clump long after the flowers are gone.
