The dark lines radiating from the throat are nectar guides, and to a bee they are considerably more emphatic than they look to us. Most of them extend into the ultraviolet, which bees see and we do not.
Violas take frost and keep flowering, which is why they get planted for early spring in this climate and then pulled out the moment the summer heat flattens them.
