Tea tree in flower

Pink, five-petalled flowers with a near-black centre and a fringe of red-tipped stamens - a New Zealand tea tree, not native to this coast but widely planted here for exactly this display.

It is the manuka, the plant behind manuka honey, and the name comes from Captain Cook, whose crews brewed the leaves against scurvy. The wild plant is white; the pink is a garden selection.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
