Five broad magenta petals around a white throat, with a cluster of pink stigmas at the centre: a winecup, the poppy mallow of the American prairies, which trails along the ground rather than standing up and opens each flower for a single day. A plant of the dry grasslands of the middle of the continent, a long way from a Brooklyn border, but happy on sharp drainage.
The twisted, thread-like styles reaching out past the stamens are a mallow-family signature, and the white eye against that particular shade of magenta is what separates this from the garden mallows and hollyhocks that share the shape.
