Prairie Smoke in seed in the June border, a plant of the dry prairies of the middle of the continent and the northern Rockies, and an easy one to grow anywhere with sharp drainage.
The flowers themselves are unremarkable, small nodding pink bells low to the ground. It is the seed heads that give the plant its name: each achene trails a long, feathery, pink-tinged style that catches the light, and in a drift it genuinely looks like smoke rising off the ground.
