Flowering quince
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 30 March 2025

Bright coral-red flowers straight off a bare, thorny branch, well ahead of any leaves.
An East Asian shrub grown almost entirely for this early show, since the small, hard fruit that follows is edible only after a lot of sugar. The fruit is fiercely fragrant, though, and a bowl of it will scent a room for weeks - which is how the Japanese use it.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
