Warm-blooded, furred, and fed on milk as infants, which is the whole of what a bat, a whale and a giraffe have in common. Most are nocturnal, shy or both, and are more often seen as tracks than as animals. The exceptions are on the African savannah, where the big animals have lived alongside vehicles long enough to ignore them, and in city parks, where the small ones have done the same with people.

A giraffe's neck has seven vertebrae, the same number as a human's, a mouse's and nearly every other mammal's. Each one is simply enormous, and the arrangement is so fixed that the sloths, with eight or nine, count as a famous exception.
