A bull African Buffalo in the Mara, the herd behind him a wall of the same dark brown. Buffalo are grazers of the grasslands and wooded savanna across sub-Saharan Africa, living in herds of hundreds that never move far from water, and the Mara's herds are among the biggest in Kenya.
The boss, the fused shield of horn across the forehead, marks a mature bull. It thickens with age, and it is the reason two bulls can run at each other head on. The reputation is broadly earned: they are not aggressive without cause, but a herd will turn on a predator rather than scatter, and lions are killed by them regularly. Black and white because the only thing worth keeping was the face.
