A young elephant in the Mara with its ears out and trunk up, working out what we were. The ears make the animal look bigger; the raised trunk is smelling rather than threatening. Bush elephants live in family herds across the savanna of East and Southern Africa, and the Mara's herds move between the reserve and the Serengeti with the grass.
An elephant's sense of smell is the best measured in any land mammal, roughly twice a bloodhound's by receptor gene count, and they can tell quantities of food apart by scent alone.
