A Topi standing in the long grass of the Mara, an antelope of the open floodplains and grasslands of East Africa, and one of the commonest here. It grazes the taller grass the wildebeest leave, and the males are conspicuous standers: one will spend hours on a termite mound doing nothing but looking, which is as much display as it is vigilance.
The dark patches on the thighs and shoulders are the field mark. At any distance a topi reads as an antelope wearing black stockings, and the coat has an odd sheen in flat light, almost metallic. They are among the faster antelopes on the plains.
