Eastern Chipmunk

An Eastern Chipmunk on Staten Island, a ground squirrel of the eastern woodlands and every garden in them, and one of the few mammals a walker is guaranteed to see.

The five dark stripes running the length of the back, alternating with paler ones, are the clearest way to tell it from any of the similarly-sized ground squirrels, none of which occur naturally this far east in any case. It caches food rather than hibernating properly, waking periodically in its burrow to eat from a stockpile built up all summer, and the cheek pouches can carry a dozen acorns at a time.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
