Two White-tailed does in the Blue Ridge woods in November, ears forward and both looking straight down the lens. White-tails are the deer of the whole eastern United States, and the Appalachian woods are as full of them as anywhere; deer this alert have already caught wind or sound of the camera and are deciding whether it is worth the run.

The white underside of the tail, which gives the species its name, goes up like a flag the moment they do, a signal to the rest of the group that is visible for a long way through the trees.

A White-tailed Deer fawn in the woods of Upstate New York, up on legs still slightly too long for the rest of it and looking straight down the lens. White-tails live across the whole eastern half of the continent, in woodland and on its edges, and Upstate's mix of woods and fields is about as good as their country gets.

The white spots break up its outline in dappled woodland light and will be gone by its first winter, once the adult coat comes in. For its first few weeks a fawn spends most of the day lying hidden and alone while the doe feeds elsewhere, returning only to nurse. A fawn found by itself is almost never abandoned, and the best thing to do is leave it exactly where it is.

A White-tailed Deer fawn folded low into the grass of an Upstate meadow in August, still fully spotted. White-tails are the deer of the whole eastern United States, of woodland edge and farmland, and a fawn spends its first weeks hidden like this while the doe feeds elsewhere.

It is the classic strategy fawns rely on before they are fast enough to outrun anything: stay still and let the camouflage do the work. A fawn has almost no scent for its first weeks, which is the other half of the strategy. The doe stays away for most of the day so as not to lead anything to it, and comes back only to nurse.
