Herons & egrets
Long-legged, long-necked hunters that stand still for a living, from the Great Blue Heron down to the Green Heron, which is about the size of a crow. They fish the edges of ponds, marshes and mangroves, and in the Everglades the winter dry season crowds them round the shrinking pools.
The egrets' white breeding plumes very nearly finished them. In the 1880s the plumes were worth more than their weight in gold to the hat trade, and the slaughter of the Florida rookeries is what brought the first Audubon Societies into being and, in 1900, the first federal wildlife law in the United States.
