Finches
Seed eaters with heavy, conical bills, and a family with a talent for colonising islands, where a finch left alone for long enough tends to turn into a new species. Goldfinches, greenfinches and chaffinches are the familiar European ones; the goldfinch and the House Finch the American.
The American Goldfinch nests later than almost any other songbird, in July and August, because it waits for the thistles to seed and feeds its young on little else. A cowbird that lays in a goldfinch nest raises a chick that starves on the diet.
