A pair of European Serins on a lichen-draped branch in Tenerife, small enough and plain enough in build that the bright yellow head and breast are doing all the identification work. The serin is a bird of the Mediterranean and the islands, of pine edges and orchards, and on the Canaries it is common in every garden.
The domesticated canary was bred from this genus's close island relative, the Atlantic canary, which is endemic to exactly this archipelago. The wild canary is a streaky greenish bird; the yellow was bred in over four hundred years.
