A European Goldfinch on a niger seed feeder in a Kent garden in December, one of the more colourful regulars at a British feeder. Goldfinches are birds of rough ground and hedgerow across Europe, living on thistle and teasel seed, and they have taken to garden feeders only in the last thirty years.
A red face, black-and-white head and a broad gold wing bar. The fine, pointed bill is built for winkling seed out of teasel and thistle heads rather than cracking anything large, which is why niger seed suits it so well. The red face was, in mediaeval legend, from the blood of Christ, which is why the bird appears in so many paintings of the Madonna.
