Trees - Conifers
The cone-bearing trees: pines, spruces, firs, cedars, hemlocks and the redwoods. They are the older group, and conifers were forests long before there was a flower anywhere on earth. Most keep their needles through winter, which is a way of living on thin soil in a cold place.
The Coast Redwood is the tallest living thing, at over a hundred and fifteen metres, and it drinks the fog. On the Californian coast a redwood takes in a good part of its water not through its roots but through its needles, from the sea fog that rolls in on summer nights, and the drip from its crown waters the forest floor.
