The tiered, flat-topped silhouette is the giveaway even at a distance - lower branches held out nearly horizontal and the crown flattening with age, a habit this species keeps whether it is on a mountainside in the Levant or standing alone in an English meadow full of oxeye daisies.
Cedars of Lebanon arrived in England in the 1600s and became the tree of the great house. Almost every eighteenth-century park has one, and most are now near the end of their natural span.
