Narrow spires with the branches held tight in - the shape conifers take at altitude, where the point is to shed snow rather than gather light. A wide crown at this height would break under the first serious load.
Several of the trees behind are dead and standing. Whitebark and lodgepole in this region have been badly hit by mountain pine beetle, which used to be killed off by hard winters and increasingly is not.
