A named tree. The marker gives 310 feet, over 13 feet across, and roughly 1,300 years old, in what the style of the interpretive sign strongly suggests is Muir Woods, one of the few old-growth coast redwood groves left within easy reach of San Francisco.
A maple has seeded itself partway up the trunk, its fresh spring leaves the brightest green in the whole frame against redwood bark that old growth turns almost black. The bark is a foot thick and full of tannin, which is why fire, rot and insects all leave it alone, and why the tree has stood since the seventh century.
