Temperate rainforest, and one of the wettest places in the continental United States - three to four metres of rain in a year. What that buys is the moss.
The feathery, drooping sprays of foliage are western hemlock's, the other great tree of this forest alongside Sitka spruce. The pale beards hanging from every branch are epiphytes, mostly clubmoss and lichen, and they are not parasites. They take nothing from the tree except somewhere to sit and a share of the light.
