Waders & shorebirds
The birds of the tideline and the marsh edge, called waders in Britain and shorebirds in America, and the ibises with them, which the Americans call wading birds and which spend their days in much the same mud. Most are long-legged, long-billed and built for probing.
The Piping Plover nests on the same Rockaway beaches that Brooklyn goes to in July, in a scrape in the open sand behind a line of string and signs. There are only a few thousand pairs on the whole Atlantic coast, and a part of the New York City population nests within sight of the A train.
