Moths
The other, larger half of the Lepidoptera. Most fly at night and rest by day with their wings flat, but a good few are day-fliers, and the hummingbird moths hover at flowers exactly as the birds do and are mistaken for them constantly.
There are perhaps ten moths for every butterfly. Of the hundred and eighty thousand or so known species of Lepidoptera, butterflies are fewer than twenty thousand; everything else is a moth, and the ones drawn to a lit window at night are a small sample of what is out there.
