Waterfowl
Ducks, geese and swans, and the grebes too, since they share the water and the field-guide page even though they are a separate order. Winter is the season for them: once the northern ponds freeze, the lagoons of the coasts and the lakes of city parks fill with birds that spent the summer somewhere much colder.
Dabbling ducks feed by up-ending and can spring straight off the water; diving ducks have their legs set further back and need a run across the surface to take off. The grebes go one further and are so poorly built for land that they can barely walk on it, which is why a grebe's nest is a floating raft of weed.
