A Winter Wren in Central Park in late October, barely bigger than the knot in the branch it is standing on, tail cocked up in the family's signature posture. It breeds in the mossy conifer forests of the north and winters in the tangles and brush piles of the eastern woods, and a park in October is a stopover.
Built for scrambling through downed brush and root tangles rather than open perches, which makes a clean view like this one unusual. The song is the astonishing thing: ten seconds of tumbling notes from a bird the weight of two pennies, at ten times the power per ounce of a crowing rooster.
