A young katydid picking its way across a magenta hibiscus petal in the July border, on legs and antennae still out of proportion to the rest of it. Katydids live in the foliage of shrubs and trees across the eastern United States, singing at night, and the bush katydids are the commonest ones in a Brooklyn garden.
Much of a nymph's early growth goes into those legs and antennae before the body catches up. The slim green build suggests one of the bush katydids, Scudderia, though a nymph this young can't be put to species. Katydid is the American name; in Britain the same family are bush-crickets.
