Grasshoppers & crickets
Insects that sing by rubbing, and jump for a living: the grasshoppers, which sing with their legs, and the katydids and bush-crickets, which sing with their wings. A meadow in late summer is loudest with them.
Their ears are in odd places. A grasshopper hears with a membrane on the side of its abdomen; a katydid's ears are on its front legs, just below the knee, so a katydid listening turns its legs rather than its head.
