A flesh fly on a cow parsley head on the cliffs of the Glamorgan coast, working the umbellifer for nectar, which is what the adults mostly eat. Flesh flies are everywhere there is something dead, which is everywhere, and the hedgerow flowers of July are where the adults spend the daylight.
The checkerboard grey abdomen and bristled legs point to the family, Sarcophagidae, better known, when it is known at all, for laying live larvae directly onto meat or carrion rather than eggs.
