Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Constitution Marsh, 17 October 2026

A Ruby-crowned Kinglet among dead stems at Constitution Marsh, one of the smallest birds in North America, on its way south from the spruce forests of Canada. Kinglets come through the Hudson Valley in numbers in October, flicking their wings constantly as they work the twigs for insects.
The red crown patch is usually hidden and raised only when the bird is excited, and only males have it, so this is a male. A kinglet weighs about six grams, and a female can lay a clutch of eleven or twelve eggs that together weigh about as much as she does.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
