Brandt's Cormorants

Brandt's Cormorants on the cliff at La Jolla, a Pacific coast species that nests in dense colonies on rock stacks and ledges from Alaska to Baja, often shoulder to shoulder with pelicans and gulls on the same rock. The cliff here holds hundreds.

The electric-blue throat patch is breeding condition and lasts only a few weeks each spring, worn along with a scatter of white filoplumes on the head and neck that are gone again by the time eggs are laid.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
