A Northern Mockingbird singing from a lichen-crusted headstone at Green-Wood in May, which makes as good a singing post as any tree limb. Mockingbirds are birds of open ground, hedges and suburbs across the southern two thirds of the continent, and they are not shy about claiming the most exposed perch available.
The name is earned. An individual male can learn and cycle through dozens of other species' songs and calls, plus car alarms and gate hinges, stringing them together into one long, repeating performance, and an unmated male will sing all night.
