Mockingbirds & thrashers
The mimids, which are the great singers of the American garden. All of them sing long, varied songs, largely borrowed from other birds, and from anything else that makes a noise; the catbird's is the one that ends in a mew.
A mockingbird goes on learning songs its whole life and can carry two hundred of them, including car alarms, squeaky gates and the rest of the neighbourhood's birds in turn. The male sings at night in spring, which is charming for the first week.
