A Song Sparrow singing from an exposed twig in Prospect Park at the end of May, one of the most persistent singers in the park through late spring. It breeds in the park's thickets and along the lake edge, and it returns to the same twig visit after visit, which is presumably how this one ended up posed so obligingly in the open.

The heavy central breast spot and the buzzy, three-part song - a few clear opening notes, then a trill - are about as reliable an identification as any sparrow offers.

A Song Sparrow singing from a low perch in Prospect Park in May, a bird of thicket and wet edge across the continent and one of the park's commonest breeders.

The heavy central breast spot, where the streaking below the throat converges into one dark blotch, is the reliable field mark on an otherwise variably-streaked sparrow. Song Sparrows are also known for genuine song dialects: birds in different regions, and even different individuals within the same population, sing distinguishably different versions of the species' song, learned from the neighbours.

A Song Sparrow on a fence rail in a San Diego garden, one of the coastal Californian race, which runs darker and more richly coloured than the paler interior and eastern forms. It is a bird of damp thicket and garden edge across the whole continent, and a rail beside a border is a typical singing post.

The dark central breast spot amid heavy streaking is the classic mark, though Song Sparrows vary enormously across their range, to the point where regional field guides sometimes show the Californian birds separately.
