Song Sparrow on a log
Melospiza melodia
Song Sparrow · Constitution Marsh · 17 October 2026

A Song Sparrow on a broken log in the woods beside Constitution Marsh. It is a bird of damp thickets from Alaska to Mexico, and it varies so much across that range that more than two dozen subspecies have been named, from small pale birds of the desert to big dark ones on the Aleutian Islands.
The heavy streaks gathering into a central spot on the breast are the mark to look for on any of them. Each male sings eight or so different song types, repeating one several times before switching to the next.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
