Bald Eagle overhead
Constitution Marsh, 17 October 2026

An adult Bald Eagle circling over Constitution Marsh under a grey October sky. Bald Eagles nest along the Hudson now, and many more come down from Canada for the winter to fish the river where the tide keeps it open.
By the 1970s New York was down to a single nesting pair, the rest lost to DDT, which thinned their eggshells until the eggs broke under the sitting bird. The state brought in young eagles from Alaska and raised them on towers until they could fly, and there are now several hundred pairs. It takes an eagle about five years to come into this white head and tail.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
