A Red-throated Diver on the sheltered water at Dungeness in December, in winter plumage. Britain's smallest diver breeds on remote lochs in the north of Scotland and winters on the coast, and the shingle shore here is one of the reliable places to see one.
Winter plumage rather than the breeding adult's grey head and namesake red throat - the plainer, streakier look most divers wear for the colder months, with just the thin, slightly upturned bill giving the species away. In America it is the Red-throated Loon, and the wailing call is the same on both sides.
