Birds

Hummingbirds

The smallest birds, and found only in the Americas. In the east there is only one, the Ruby-throated, and the ones at garden flowers in late summer are fuelling up for the trip south; the west has several, and some stay all winter.

A Ruby-throated Hummingbird weighs about three grams and flies across the Gulf of Mexico non-stop, five hundred miles of open water, in a single night. Before it goes it nearly doubles its weight in fat.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
