A Monarch airborne over a bed of faded flowerheads in the August border, the wings caught mid-beat. This is the migratory generation, on its way out of Brooklyn toward Mexico.
A Monarch's flight looks lazy, a few flaps then a glide, and it is deceptive: this is one of the few insects that migrates like a bird, and the generation on the wing in late summer will fly to the mountains of central Mexico, two thousand miles or more, on wings that weigh next to nothing.
