A Great Egret working the near edge of a mangrove-lined lagoon in the Everglades at dusk, its reflection complete in still water, with a raft of small waterfowl too distant to identify out on the open water behind. Great Egrets fish the shallows across the South, and this lagoon is the kind of water they were nearly hunted out of.
The Everglades were the centre of the plume trade that nearly wiped this species out around 1900 - the breeding plumes fetched more than gold by weight - and the campaign to stop it produced both the National Audubon Society and, eventually, the park itself. The egret is the society's emblem.
