Checkerbloom
Coastal areas Northern California, 25 April 2025

Deep pink, finely veined petals around a cluster of white-tipped stigmas - a mallow-family wildflower native to California's coast and hills.
A close relative of the hollyhock scaled down to a fraction of the size, and the host plant for several of the state's skipper butterflies. It flowers in the last weeks before the hills go brown for the summer.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
