A Townsend's Warbler in a San Diego garden in March, at the southern end of a wintering range that runs almost entirely along the Pacific coast and up into the tall conifers of the Northwest. It breeds much further north, in the spruce and fir forests of British Columbia and Alaska.
A black cheek patch set into an otherwise yellow face is the mark. The wintering range is narrow enough that a New York birder mostly has to travel to see one, and this is one of the birds that makes a Californian winter worth the flight.
