A Purple Gallinule picking through the lily leaves on those absurd yellow feet in the Everglades in February, a marsh bird of the tropics that reaches Florida and the Gulf coast wherever there is floating vegetation to walk on.

Young gallinules from an earlier brood will often stay on with their parents and help feed the next clutch of chicks, cooperative breeding that is unusual among rails, most of which are solitary and territorial to the point of rarely tolerating even their own grown offspring nearby.

A Purple Gallinule walking across the lily pads in the Everglades in February. It is a bird of freshwater marsh with floating vegetation across the American South and the tropics, and the Everglades sloughs, carpeted in lily pads, are its country exactly.

The feet are the real adaptation. A Purple Gallinule's toes are enormously long relative to its body, spreading its weight widely enough to walk across floating vegetation that wouldn't support almost anything else its size - the same trick a jacana uses, arrived at independently in an unrelated family. The colour isn't pigment. Structural interference within the feather's keratin produces the blue and green, which is why it shifts so much with the angle of the light.
