Other Wildlife

Marine life

The sea mammals, seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales, which are easier to see than they sound: sea lions lie on harbour breakwaters in full view, and a few stretches of coast hold resident pods of whales that a boat can reach in half an hour.

A sea lion can be told from a seal at a glance: it has small external ears and walks on its flippers, while a true seal has none and moves on land like a caterpillar. The Californian ones are the animals trained to balance balls, which they do in the wild too, more or less, playing with kelp.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
