A magnolia relative rather than a tulip, named for the shape of the flowers - greenish-yellow with an orange band at the base of each petal, and held upright high in the canopy where they are easy to miss from below.
One of the tallest hardwoods in eastern North America and among the straightest-trunked. A mature tree can run branchless for a great height, which is why colonial shipbuilders prized a single tulip tree log for a dugout canoe or a mast.
