True bugs
The word bug means something particular to an entomologist: an insect with a beak, a piercing tube folded under the head, which it uses to suck sap or the juices of other insects. Shield bugs, planthoppers and lanternflies are true bugs; most of what people call bugs are not.
The Spotted Lanternfly arrived in Pennsylvania from Asia in 2014 and reached New York City in 2020. It feeds on grapevines and trees and is spreading fast enough that the city's official advice, printed on posters, is to stamp on it.
