Beetles
A beetle is an insect that has turned its front wings into armour, a pair of hard cases that meet in a line down the back and cover the flying wings underneath. Ladybirds, soldier beetles, longhorns and leaf beetles are the ones a garden offers.
There are more kinds of beetle than of any other animal: roughly one in four of every animal species ever described is a beetle. The biologist J. B. S. Haldane, asked what the study of nature revealed about its creator, is supposed to have said "an inordinate fondness for beetles".
