Tree Nymph

A Tree Nymph at rest in the butterfly house, a butterfly of the coastal forests and mangroves of Southeast Asia, from Malaysia to the Philippines, where it drifts through the canopy on a slow glide.

Also sold under the more prosaic name "rice paper butterfly", for the way light comes through the wing between the black veins. The wings are unusually large for the butterfly's weight, which is why it flies with a slow, drifting glide rather than the quick wingbeats of most of the others here - a flight style that made it a favourite for early butterfly-house imports, since visitors could actually keep it in view.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
