Wild strawberry flower

Five white petals and a boss of yellow stamens on a low, hairy stem - one of the wild strawberries, likely the beach or woodland species native to this coast.

The garden strawberry is a cross between the Chilean and the Virginian wild species, made by accident in a French garden in the 1750s when the two were planted side by side. Every supermarket strawberry is descended from that bed.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
